“Nudity doesn’t shock us anymore,” CNN recently reported after news broke of the male full frontals at the Rick Owens fashion show on Jan. 22nd in Paris. The men wore clothes with peephole cut-outs showing off what used to be known as their, “private parts.” Knowing these looks are saved just for the fashion world, and the runway, is somewhat of a consolation to many people. And, although the designer has no intention of selling the garments with the peepholes, he did intend to bring attention to his fashion, and he did just that.
Critics are pointing fingers at people like the Kardashian sisters for baring their rear-ends, Miley Cyrus for her nude social media stunts, and actress Scout Willis for her topless march down an NYC street last year, for making this type of behavior acceptable. It may well be the next big step in equality, as we’ve been seeing women’s privates in movies and on catwalks for decades, now let the men have a turn. CNN wrote, “Of course, women have been going full frontal in films for years. Perhaps the onslaught of nakedness is a sign that public nudity is becoming an equal opportunity endeavor; that women are no longer required to do all the showing.” Another recent uproar came from the cameo of Ben Affleck’s penis in the movie, “Gone Girl.” It’s a sign that people in general are becoming less shocked by nudity altogether.
The human body is a beautiful thing, and in the world of fashion is the pinnacle of what designers are trying to showcase. For Rick Owens though it’s more of a childish approach, “It’s a little bit of a juvenile transgression.” STYLE. Owens also said, “Nudity is the most simple and primal gesture…it packs a punch,” and “It’s powerful. … Who else can really get away with this stuff? It’s a corporate world!” CNN. Art reflects real life and real life reflects art, so it’s a sign that male nudity is becoming more commonplace around the world. Art often sparks a movement, or simply fuels the fire of what’s already happening.
We are learning to love ourselves, and be comfortable with our own assets. Showing that nudity is all about self-confidence, and pride, rather than shock-value. Many men are turning to penis enhancements to achieve this level of self-confidence, just as women have turned to enhancing their breasts for decades. Being nude is about being comfortable in our skin, loving ourselves, and being proud of our human bodies.
